Women Earth Alliance Kenya Program (WEA)

The Women’s Earth Alliance Kenya Program, is a program where Women in Water and Natural Resources Conservation (WWANC) has partnered with Women Earth Alliance (WEA) to implement climate mitigation solutions, Eco entrepreneurship & business development, sustainable livelihoods & economic empowerment projects aimed at empowering grassroots women.

The Program focuses on:

  1. Forest Restoration Activities – Planting of native trees in Kakamega Tropical Rainforest (Ihondolo block).
  2. Agroforestry- Planting of agroforestry trees in farmlands/smallholder farmers.
  3. Riparian land restoration- Planting of ecologically friendly native trees along rivers.
  4. Livelihoods and economic empowerment – Establishment of climate smart solutions for women to implement e.g. installation of energy saving jikos, Soap making, kitchen garden etc.
  5. Eco entrepreneurship and business development – Revolving fund/seed grants.
  6. Women’s Leadership and Rights – Capacity building through training on leadership.
  7. Environment and Climate Change- Training on Climate adaptation, mitigation and Resilience.
  8. Establishment of three climate hubs to support women with additional knowledge on climate change mitigation.

Project overview

  • The project has expanded to 13 Counties in Kenya (Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Nandi, Homabay, Siaya, Nakuru, Makueni, Trans Nzoia, Kilifi, Kitui, West Pokot and Kiambu).
  • Trained over 17,000 women on COVID-19 and climate resilience.
  • Launched 3,000 eco-friendly business enterprises.
  • Planted 348,071 indigenous trees for forest restoration & Agroforestry in Kakamega forest segments i.e.  Malava, Bunyala and Ihondolo.
  • Installed 16,000 energy saving jikos in 8,000 households across the counties.
