Thriving Trees and Flourishing Nurseries: Progress in Kakamega Forest Restoration

WWANC team, led by Co-director and CEO Rose Wamalwa, in collaboration with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Scouts, recently conducted a monitoring exercise to assess the progress of ongoing restoration efforts at the Shamiloli and Iloro forest blocks.

In partnership with the International Tree Foundation (ITF), WWANC is working to restore 250 hectares of degraded forest land by planting indigenous tree species that are well-suited to the local ecosystem. The evaluation focused on the visible impacts of the Kakamega Tropical Rainforest Rehabilitation Project, and the results are inspiring.

Significant positive changes have been observed at all three sites, with the planted trees thriving and an eco-friendly canopy developing rapidly. Additionally, community tree nurseries established near the restoration sites are flourishing with healthy indigenous tree seedlings.

During the visit, CEO Rose Wamalwa expressed appreciation for the cooperation and commitment shown by the communities and KFS, which have been vital to the success of these restoration efforts.
