Build a Woman to Restore Mau Initiative

The "Build a Woman to Restore Mau Initiative" is a capacity-building program aimed at empowering women to take a leading role in the restoration and conservation of the Mau Forest.

The project which is being implemented by WWANC in partnership with the Embassy of Ireland in Kenya focuses on training women in forest restoration, sustainable land management practices, leadership and governance, as well as gender and social equity. By equipping women with these essential skills, the initiative seeks to enhance their participation in environmental conservation and promote sustainable livelihoods for communities around the Mau Forest complex.

Objectives of the Initiative

  1. Forest Restoration Training– Providing practical training on tree nursery establishment, tree planting, and ecosystem rehabilitation.
  2. Sustainable Land Management Practices– Educating women on agroforestry, soil conservation, and climate-smart agriculture to promote sustainable livelihoods.
  3. Leadership and Governance– Building women's leadership skills to enhance their participation in decision-making processes related to conservation and community development.
  4. Gender and Social Equity– Advocating for women's inclusion in environmental governance and ensuring gender-responsive policies in conservation efforts.

The "Build a Woman to Restore Mau Initiative" is a transformative approach to conservation that recognizes the role of women as key drivers of environmental sustainability. By equipping them with knowledge, skills, and leadership abilities, the initiative ensures a sustainable future for the Mau Forest and the communities that depend on it. Strengthening women’s involvement in conservation efforts will not only restore the Mau ecosystem but also enhance socio-economic development in the region.
