Women Earth Alliance - Kenya Program
The Women’s Earth Alliance Kenya Program, is a program being implemented by Women in Water and Natural Resources Conservation (WWANC) in partnership with Women Earth Alliance (WEA). It focuses on climate mitigation solutions, Eco entrepreneurship & business development, sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment projects aimed at empowering grass-roots women.
The Program focuses on:
- Forest Restoration Activities – Planting of native trees in Kakamega Tropical Rainforest (Ihondolo, Bunyala and Malava segments).
- Agroforestry- Planting of agroforestry trees in farmlands/smallholder farms.
- Livelihoods and economic empowerment – Establishment of climate smart solutions for women to implement e.g. installation of energy saving jikos, kitchen garden etc.
- Eco entrepreneurship and business development – Revolving fund/seed grants.
- Women’s Leadership and Rights – Capacity building through training on leadership.
- Environment and Climate Change- Training on Climate adaptation, mitigation and Resilience.
- Establishment of climate hubs to support women with additional knowledge on climate change mitigation.
Project Overview
The project has expanded to 14 Counties in Kenya (Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Nandi, Homabay, Siaya, Nakuru, Narok, Makueni, Trans Nzoia, Kilifi, Kitui, West Pokot and Kiambu).
- 54,758 people reached through our programs
- Trained 90 women directly in ASAL communities (West Pokot, Narok,
Kilifi, Kitui and Makueni) on climate resilience, adaptation and mitigation.
- Established Climate demonstration Hubs in Makueni.
- 7,041 adopted climate smart initiatives
- 3,618 women engaging in business.
- Increased food security with 3,000 households having 3 meals a day
- 50 hactares of forest land restored and protected
Kakamega forest segments i.e. Malava, Bunyala and Ihondolo.
- Installed 16,000 energy saving jikos in 8,000 households across the counties.
- Established 3 community demontration hubs in Kisembe, Kochwa and Sisokhe in Navakholo
